A side of the building before it was demolished

Officials of the Lagos State Building Control Agency, LASBCA, on Thursday demolished a nine-storey building in Eti-Osa, Lekki area of Lagos, Southwest Nigeria over illegal development.
LASBCA officials, escorted by Task Force men stormed the area in the morning and immediately began demolition of the property, having been served stop work notice several times.
The owner of the 9-storey building under construction on Dad Fayemi Close, Osapa London, Lekki was said to have violated the physical planning laws of Lagos, as only four floors was allowed to be built in that area according to the master plan.
General Manager, LASBCA, Engr. Lekan Shodeinde said the agency embarked on the exercise because the development was illegal and that government was determined to halt building collapse in the Lagos metropolis.
“The Lagos State Government wants to prevent collapse of buildings and nip them in the bud,” he said, adding that government did not want a repeat of the past where high-rising building collapsed in the state due to illegal development of structures.
Shodeinde said the owner of the building erected nine floors in an area where approval limit was not more than four floors, saying that overtime, the agency officials had interacted with the developer, but lamented that he kept on building without due approval.
“We discovered this site in September 2017 and we issued the owner a contravention notice as there was no approval granted for the erection of the structure. We advised them to stop work and we sealed up the site in October. As at March 2018, our officers went to the site and the building has gone up. We brought the matter to the ministry.

“The building is blocking the Fayemi Crescent and turned it into a Close. We sought approval for its removal and it was granted and that is why we have come to demolish the building,” he explained.
Shodeinde said the owner of the building did not submit any drawing to the Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority, LASPPPA, for approval, adding that when the building was sealed in March, the owner quickly submitted a drawing to LASPPPA, but that it was not approved.
“In that area, you cannot go more than four floors, but going nine floors is a risky venture,” he said, adding that LASBCA was an enforcement body of the state government to ensure that people do the right thing.
