The Special Investigation Panel on Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) , led by Executive Secretary National Human
Rights Commission( NHRC) Tony Ojukwu Esq began sitting for North West Zone ,Monday in Kano .
The Panel which was set up at the wake of complaints of gender based violations by Abuja Environmental Protection Board has received a total of 114 complaints from the six geopolitical zones of the country.
Panel Chairman Tony Ojukwu at the opening session disclosed that the Kano sitting will be the fifth since the exercise commenced last year.
Ojukwu lamented that the issues of sexual harassment, assault and extra judicial killings have become so rampant in all facets including sacred places of worship that if care is not taken, the human society will be destroyed .So far South East tops the list of complaints received from the zones with a total of 35 cases.
He noted that the Panel so far has been able to encourage survivors to come forward and present their cases without fear adding that there are sufficient protection for every complaint.
Earlier the Panel had received 12 complaints from the NW zone , the least so far . The Panel had completed sitting in North Central, South West and South South and South East. With North West done ,the Panel will be left with North East to complete sitting.
